An Honest Woodcutter (সৎ কাঠুরিয়া)
Once upon a time, there lived a poor woodcutter in a small village. He was very poor, but he was very honest. He earned his living by cutting wood in a nearby forest and selling it in the local market.
One day, while he was cutting a branch of a tree on the bank of a deep river, his axe suddenly slipped from his hand and fell into the water. The river was very deep, and the current was strong. The woodcutter did not know how to swim, nor could he buy a new axe because he had no money. Sitting on the bank of the river, he began to cry bitterly.
Seeing his distress, Mercury, the river goddess, appeared before him. She asked, "Why are you crying, my friend?" The woodcutter told her the whole story. Hearing his sad story, the goddess felt pity for him. She jumped into the river and brought out a golden axe. She asked, "Is this your axe?" The woodcutter looked at it and replied, "No, it is not mine."
Then, the goddess dived into the water again and brought out a silver axe. She asked him if that was his. Again, the honest woodcutter answered, "No, it is not my axe either."
Finally, the goddess dived into the river a third time and brought out an iron axe. Seeing his old iron axe, the woodcutter’s face lit up with joy. He exclaimed, "Yes, yes! This is my axe!"
The goddess was highly pleased with the honesty of the poor woodcutter. As a reward for his truthfulness, she gave him both the golden and silver axes along with his iron axe. The woodcutter returned home happily and lived a prosperous life ever after.
(Bangla Translation)
Moral of the story: Honesty is the best policy.
